Histoire de ce livre

Victor Bockris m’a envoyé With William Burroughs – A Report from the Bunker en juillet 1981, quatre mois après notre première rencontre au Bunker de William Burroughs (voir le chapitre Le Temps des Naguals, dans  Le Temps des Naguals – Autour de Burroughs et Gysin, édition française). Ce livre, constitué d’enregistrements de conversations,  donnait de Burroughs et des autres intervenants une image sans filtre. C’était en outre une mine d’information sur la scène littéraire et artistique newyorkaise et, plus largement, sur des auteurs de la littérature mondiale du XXème siècle, ainsi qu’un livre vivant et très drôle.

J’ai proposé à Victor de le traduire en vue d’une publication en France, ce qu’il a  accepté. Nous avons travaillé ensemble à cette traduction pendant trois ans. Une fois celle-ci terminée, j’en ai informé Brion Gysin. Peu après, Brion reçut la visite de Bernard Wallet, des éditions Denoël, qui était à la recherche de futures publications, et me conseilla de lui envoyer le manuscrit. Avec William Burroughs est sorti en 1985.  

 

Story of this book

Victor Bockris sent me With William Burroughs – A Report from the Bunker in July 1981, four months after our first meeting at William Burroughs’  Bunker (see the chapter The Time of the Naguals, in the book  The Time of the Naguals – Around Burroughs and Gysin , English edition). This book, a set of recorded conversations, was giving an image without filter of Burroughs and the other participants. Moreover it was a mine of information about  the literary and artistic scene in New York, and more widely, about authors of the world wide literature of the XXth century, as well as a living and very funny book.

I proposed Victor to translate it for a future publication in France, which he accepted.  We worked together at this translation during three years. Once it was finished, I informed Brion Gysin. Shortly thereafter, he received the visit of Bernard Wallet, from the editions Denoël, who was looking for future publications, and advised me to send him the manuscript. Avec William Burroughs came out in 1985.
